Summer 2010 Dinner Lecture Calendar

Title: Food As Medicine—Food As Everyday Eating
A Lecture by Michael Rossoff, L.Ac.

For many macrobiotics is popularly known as a healing diet for cancer sufferers. One will hear someone say that if they got cancer then they would quickly start a macrobiotic eating plan. While macrobiotics has helped thousands of people with cancer and other serious diseases, there is much more to it than that.

On the other end of the spectrum, macrobiotic teachers speak of the “macrobiotic philosophy” as the key to changing ourselves, our environment, society and world. Between these two views lies a wide gulf of understanding. The goals and focus of each are very different, therefore the actions they inform will obviously differ.

What is missing in our understanding of macrobiotics is that it is not a single diet, or even a diet at all. It is a way of eating that is based on commonsense principles and the seasonal changes in nature’s bounty. The longstanding challenge is how to explain macrobiotics in a way that can encompass both its strict guidelines for helping heal serious diseases and its broader applications for everyone else.

This evening’s lecture will clearly explain how, when and why to use macrobiotic principles for healing purposes versus for everyday life. Michael will help you understand whether you are too lax or too strict with your eating. In addition, we cannot escape the truth that everyone eats for emotional reasons. So whether you are eating a “healing” diet or have adopted a broad macrobiotic approach, Michael will discuss how to develop an emotionally satisfying way of eating.
